It turns out, eggs are quite a complex topic. Here are some useful facts that I have added to the memory banks.

Cracking an egg

The often overlooked step of eating eggs is that you need to remove the shell (unless your boiling them). How do you go about cracking the egg? Americas test kitchen has the answer.

Seems simple enough, and as Gordon Ramsey explains, it is very easy. It just requires work, and not burning the toast.

Free writing

I am surprised every time that I sit down to write. Its often quite hard. I mostly do not want to be there. Something weird is always trying to push me away from the page.

Inevitably, 1 of 2 things happen. The first is that I am defeated. Instead of doing work I go and watch a youtube video or read some blog post. I never take any action doing this. Its purely about content consumption. And it sucks.

The second thing which is very rewarding but very very hard to do is to just start writing. Often you simply have no sentences in your head that you want to write about. What the hell are you supposed to start with?

And that is where the trick is. You just start with a thought, write that thought out and go from there.

Now, this is such a invigorating process that you will often be swept with words or ideas at a point. Too many things will come to the front of your mind to write about. There is to much to do. So many words will come at once.

Then, they wont. They will slow down and almost stop. You will have a internal story that slows down enough for you to focus on the words that you are writing. You start to pay attention to why you are using them. You become aware of minimalism, that you should use as few words as possible to convey an idea. 

However those words now have to carry a meaning.

They have to be heavy enough to transfer the meaning and beauty of a story through to the reader with minimal effort. The reader must be able to see the writers mind exactly.

Then you awake. You have written words for a certain amount of time.

How long? Who knows. Is any of what you wrote any good? Who cares.

Why would you then do the practice of free writing? Simple really. The performance anxiety that we put on our self to write is very high. When you want to start to write for a purpose you are afraid that you wont be able to deliver content that is of high enough quality. When you write for no purpose you allow yourself to be like a child and have fun. You remove all pressure to preform.

I have been surprised how easy it was to pick up and how mind altering practicing writing for 30 minutes a day for the last month has been. Problems seem to resolve themselves around you when you give yourself time to think over ideas enough. Its a practice that I will take forward into the future. I encourage anyone now who will listen to me to do it.

What i’m learning from writing 30 minutes a day

I wake up. Rub the sleep out of my eyes. I’m half asleep still and I cant see anything because I have no contact lenses in. Take a moment to gather my thoughts. They are scattered and I shake them off.

“Alright, I’ll get up now” Ill say to myself, half an hour after I have woken up. I am a slow riser.

Get some clothes on, have a glass of water, boiled if its cold. Go to the toilet and then sit back down in my room.

I’m getting quieter in my head now, because I know what is coming.

I pull out the lined pad out of the compendium. I get my pen that is only used at this time of the day. I’ll find something to write in the first sentence. Then I will start to write. Long hand. For 3 full pages. No line spaces. 

Now your in the thick of your mind. Your mind is racing to think up something to write. At the same time your hands are having to go at speed to get the words down but they are limited to the speed at which you can write.

Your mind now becomes clear. You cannot think 1000 different things at once. But you have to come up with something clear so that you can relax and not freak out by writing

“I don’t know what to write about”.

Curious though, because when you write “I don’t know what to write about”, you inevitably write something like “well the weather is nice today, I guess I could go out early to the market. I wont have to worry about rain so I can carry less stuff.”

Now your in the thick of it.

You come up with something because you have no other choice. You make something up. You define the story that you are telling yourself for the day. Your mind becomes focused and on point.

However, the first thing that comes up is horrible.

I hate this, dam that, why are people so annoying, my back hurts, I didn’t get good sleep last night.

In reality the worst most horrible stuff that you don’t want to be focusing on comes to the surface. And you cannot stop because you have to write 3 pages…. 0.o

What do you do then? You define the things that you want to get done.

Now, you might be starting to get through your second page. Your relaxing a bit now. Lets move on with better things that you could be doing.

The third page your in the grove. Haven’t stoped yet and your flowing with thoughts of ways to improve every thought that is going through your head. You let things flow in and out of your head your just observing them. You let your mind relax and your almost finished. Write the last line and end with a great question to ponder. Your relaxed and your mind is at ease. Now go about your day.

How do I know that this is helpful? Even if I achieve nothing by writing those pages, I will do something that very few other people will do. I will put in the time it takes to write them and endure the struggle of writing them.

Monthly goals June 2014

Goals June 2014


Some what interestily I’ve now got a pinboard in my new room. So I though that given I have nothing on it yet I would put up a list of my goals that I want to achieve so that I can see it every day and refocus on what I want to be doing. Also, by posting them here I have to be somewhat accountable to myself.

So on to the list.

No Drinking alcohol. For the health benefits and also for the money saving. I’ve always wanted to do month long things and I’m sure this will be one of my easier goals for the month. The main reason it is on the list is that I can imagine that I could achieve it. So why not.

30 minutes of writing. Im not being specific as to weather it is new stuff, old jokes, not jokes, pen and paper or on the keyboard. I just want to spend a specific amount of time writing. I am not being super strict on the effort that I put into it. I get a general sense of how well I’m doing, but if it does become a problem that I think I might be slacking off, I can use the stopwatch on my phone.

Sorting out travel. Logistics…. Sigh. My biggest fault at the moment is orginsation and sorting things out. Well I dont want to accept that anymore from myself. I want to move and the destination that I have been talking about for a while now is Melbourne. I have had a look at the Melbourne subreddit I have asked a few questions there and I have found some helpful places of where to search for rental properties and jobs. I will be delving deeper into this over the next couple of months. It should keep me busy while focused on doing something cool.

Well, I hope I can keep to these goals. I know I should have been more specific on the last and that is something that I notice now that I am reviewing the list. I can’t take it off the list now. I think that that fear is something that is just my own fear moving getting in the way of what I really want. I won’t let it stop me and i’ll work around it however I can.



The questions that I get about Vibram Five Fingers

I love the faces that people pull. Often times I don’t think that half of them realize that they are doing it. Its just a natural reflex to look and see some random guy walking down the street with some crazy toe shoes on.

What I tend to love more are the series of questions that leads on from wearing them and is one of the natural conversation started that I now tend to have with people.

So, like are they comfortable?

Wow. I should wear some kind of crazy tee-shirt in bright red with the words “Im wearing toe shoes, dont be shocked” on it. About 8 out of 10 people ask this question.

The answer is obviously yes. They are comfortable and they are quiet lovely to wear. Its like walking barefoot across a really nice field that has no rocks or twigs in it. You can feel the deviations underfoot but they don’t even bother you. When there is something that has a sharp edge like a small rock, the edges are smoothed off by the sole and its really not that bad. You can even grip around those things to help strengthen you toes and work the muscles in your feet.

Are they warm?

Well, that’s kind of like asking if your hands are warm in winter in gloves, but if you were always holding a frozen pole. No they are not particularly warm but you don’t tend to notice it after a while.

So are they like socks?

While they are really thin, no. Vibram’s are definitely a shoe. A minimalist shoe, yes, but a shoe none the less. They work well for almost any activity where you would normally wear a shoe like tramping or running. More so for running because they allow the leg to work correctly with the impacts that they take.

Did you hear about the latest court case involving vibram’s, they don’t strengthen your feet

Ah, my friend your are well read. You know of that study that came out. Here’s my take from what I understand.

This all comes from the point of view that we are all naturally build to adapt. When vibram makes the claim that five fingers help strengthen your feet, they assume that you normally wear a pair of shoes that have a hard shoe and a high heal. This disengages all the muscles in your foot because they no longer have to engage to keep traction on the ground. So by saying that vibram’s strengthen your feet, what they really mean is that they return your feet to where they would naturally be, strong and healthy, if you were not wearing shoes. Its a case of semantics but that is the way of the law and court cases.

Overall, I like them and really they are a easy conversation starter that everyone can cling on to. It makes for a great ice breaker, and they are just fun.

Saying “Thank you”

I’ve been feeling limited recently. I didn’t know where this feeling of being limited was coming from. I don’t fully know now. But I have learned one simple thing, which has come from saying the simplest thing that I could say.

Thank you.

By saying that one simple thing you give people something that they cannot earn in any other way. By giving thanks you offer them a currency that they are unable to spend in this life in any way. You offer them the thing that they want way more in the world than any other thing.

You give them meaning to their life.

Its rather easy to do, and should be done as often as possible. Being more thankful of what we have keeps us humble to appreciate how nice we have it right now. It makes us present and aware.

Go and say thank you today because it will help you and also help the person being thanked.

How I deal with stage fright

Show time

I’m standing back stage. I can see the MC up on stage, engaging the crowd wonderfully with his myriad of experience to call upon. Its great to watch.

Except for the fact that I’m going on stage next. GULP

The fear is growing

I’m pacing back and forward now there is only a few minutes left till its going to be me up there, with no one else. Just me, facing the crowd. The panic sets in….

or does it??

What if there was a hack, that I could easily do that would crush fear and anxiety? What if it was so simple, that there was no way to fail at it, simply that you just needed to do it. I’m not talking about something as passive as visualization (although its a powerful tool), I’m talking about controlling body language.

Here’s where I learnt this little hack.

It comes from Amy Cuddy’s TED talk where she covers the science of our body language. Here’s the TED talk.

Its so simple

Simply holding your arms up in a power pose changes your body at a hormonal level. That is deep.

I’ve been using this almost every show that I’ve gone to and it has help tremendously. My last show, for example on Thursday 15th May I used this at the upstairs room at Kitty O’Shea’s on Courtenay place. There was no green room nowhere to hide. Just a room with a microphone in one corner and the bar in the opposite corner. I just had to stand out the back of the room with my arms in the air. No one was looking at my because they were all looking at the comic on stage. It made it super easy to get calm, and put my hands in the air like I had just won a 100 meter sprint.

And the weirdest thing happened

I wasn’t scared when I went up to preform. I was calm, relaxed and I owned that night. I didnt forget my material (I had worked on a memory technique) which is what I was so worried that I might do.

I had done it.

At the end of the night talking with other comics at the back of the room, not one person gave me the feedback “well, it would have been better if you had been more confident” which is what they told me before I started using that technique but they rather said to me “wow I loved it. I really like your character, and I really loved xyz joke.”

Why had no one exposed me to this concept earlier? How many more little hacks like this were there possibly out there, left to be discovered? I don’t know, but I do know that I will seek them out now with ferocity and passion and I know that nothing will stop me from finding them.

So when your feeling down and depressed, just give it a try. Do it when no one is looking at you, when you need a little boost and you will become powerful and confident, naturally, without effort. You will just be present.
